The World Is An Apple By Alberto S. Florentino

1 komento:

  1. We all know that apple is a symbol of rich. In this story , Mario was represented as a person who had a weakness into temptation for the sake of the people with whom he value that much.. Mario had to struggle every day to feed his family. He is a father whose primary instinct was to think about the family’s survival even if it meant letting he fall in the trap of temptation. Mario’s family happens to be in the lower bracket of society. He cannot even provide for his family’s basic needs. Although all this hardships, his wife Gloria, still manages to keep her good moral. She insists that the way they are living is a much better than the one they will have if they do wrong acts. The apple symbolizes the temptation. It appears to be big and red that could attract a person to have it unlike the one that Mario gave to his daughter, Tita, instead ―a small green apple “but she just threw it away, saying it was not a real apple. Then she cried.” In this manner, what Mario could give to his daughter was not enough to feed her needs. Her daughter was undernourished. She needs nutritious food unlike the “lugao” or “biscuits” that his wife, Gloria, buys for her that’s just what their money could afford. That’s why he was tempted to steal an apple for his daughter thinking that it would make her happy because he had somehow managed to feed her needs. However, he did not think twice and disregard the possible outcome of his action, that he was committing , misuse and might lose something important to him ― his job. He did not think “to bring home pandesal, or rice, or milk and not those ‘delicious’ apple” that are only for the rich because it is what her daughter want. By doing so, these individuals do not help their family at all; instead, they end up worsening their family’s problem. It is man’s basic instinct that drives him towards his survival. But, no matter what, he should not forget that society expects him to conform to its norms. One’s action is weighed right or wrong and thus should be kept towards the proper action. This is a story of how wrong decisions become greater burdens to a family. For me, The theme of this poem is family.
