This tale made me laugh and this is my most favorite tale of Geoffrey Chaucer. I think that the pardoners as the main character may be called as the rioters and it tells us that the pardoners are the sinful one in the story. It reflects to people who repented of the sin they had committed but in the story the pardoners who travel about the countryside selling official church pardons. The old man in the story represents the death’s messenger and the treasure near to the tree that makes them so greedy. The Pardoner delays, for he wants to finish his meal, but says that he shall tell a moral tale. He says that he will tell a tale with this moral: the love of money is the root of all evil. He claims that during his sermons he shows useless trifles that he passes off as saints' relics. He proudly tells about how he defrauds people who believed they have sinned. He states explicitly that his goal is not to save people from sin, but to gain money from them. The Pardoner says that he will not imitate the apostles in their poverty, but will have food, comfort, and a wench in every town. The story is in the moral manner and it is teaches us a lesson that don’t be greedy for a material that it can let us down and put us in the danger. And it is also said that the pardoner is an enigma, certainly not practicing what he preaches. He has made a living as a con artist, swindling people out of their money with false religious promises. Unfortunately, people fall for his tricks, wanting to believe he can help them solve their problems or absolve their guilt. It doesn't seem possible for people to fall for such scams, but they do, even today. We as a student must learn from this tale.
